What if the reason a ritual is not working has nothing to do with the ritual? What if the body simply has not been met at every layer — physical, energetic, conscious — that healing actually requires? This is the question at the heart of truly integrative care. And it is the question that shapes every program at Antarvita.

Ayurveda has always held that the body is not merely biological. It is a layered system — physical, energetic, mental, and spiritual — and that lasting health requires coherence across all of those layers simultaneously. Modern science is now building a vocabulary for exactly this understanding. What follows is a look at what that research is telling us, and what it means for the way we approach care.

The Body Operates on More Than One Level

The concept of the biofield — formally introduced in 1992 at an NIH conference — describes the measurable electromagnetic and photonic field that surrounds and permeates the living body, influencing its functions in ways that standard biochemical models do not fully account for (Hammerschlag et al., as cited in Sprengel et al., 2025). In Ayurveda, this field has been recognized for thousands of years under the name prana — the life force that animates and organizes the physical body.

What both traditions agree on is this: the physical body does not exist in isolation. It is embedded in, and shaped by, an energetic field — and that field can be supported, disrupted, and restored.

What the Research Is Telling Us

In 2025, the most comprehensive review of biofield therapy research ever published examined 353 peer-reviewed interventional studies — including 255 randomized controlled trials — across modalities including Reiki, therapeutic touch, and external qigong. Published in the Journal of Integrative and Complementary Medicine, the review found consistent, measurable benefit across pain, anxiety, fatigue, and overall quality of life (Sprengel et al., 2025).

A separate study conducted at University Hospitals Connor Whole Health between 2022 and 2024 evaluated Reiki during medical infusion treatments. Across 392 sessions provided to 268 patients, Reiki was associated with clinically meaningful improvements across every measured comfort indicator — including pain, fatigue, anxiety, nausea, and sense of wellbeing (Dyer et al., 2025). Patients described the experience as grounding, restful, and qualitatively positive.

This research does not claim that Reiki treats or cures any condition. It reflects the documented potential of energy healing to support the nervous system, restore a sense of calm, and improve quality of life — which matters in every healing context.

Why Consciousness Is the Starting Point

Psychoneuroimmunology — the science of how mental and emotional states affect immune function — has established clearly that chronic stress, unresolved grief, and sustained emotional suppression produce measurable changes in cortisol regulation, inflammatory markers, and immune surveillance (Jain, 2021). The state of the inner life is not separate from the state of the body. It is upstream of it.

Ayurveda understood this long before Western science had language for it. The ancient texts describe a progression in which imbalance begins in the subtle body and only later takes physical form. The work of healing, therefore, must reach the subtle body — not only the symptoms it has produced.

Reiki works precisely at this level. As a Reiki Master, Katy brings five years of advanced training to the work of reading and supporting the energetic body — releasing held patterns in the nervous system, working with the energetic imprints of experience, and restoring coherence at the layer where physical symptoms so often begin. This is not metaphor. It is a dimension of practice that sustained mastery makes possible.

The Role of Herbal Medicine: Preparing the Physical Terrain

Alongside energetic work, the physical body's systems need direct support. Botanical medicine — one of the oldest and most studied forms of integrative care — addresses the physical terrain with precision: reducing inflammatory burden, supporting elimination, fortifying the nervous system, and creating internal conditions more hospitable to balance.

At Antarvita, three herbs from the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia form a consistent foundation of physical support:

Turmeric — Curcuma longa. Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, is one of the most studied botanicals in integrative medicine research. Studies published in Health Science Reports (2024) and Scientific Reports (2025) identify its ability to influence cell signaling pathways and reduce systemic inflammation (Arnab et al., 2024; Guo et al., 2025). In Ayurveda it is used as an anti-ama herb — supporting the body's natural clearing of accumulated toxicity from its channels. These findings are preliminary and do not constitute treatment claims of any kind.

Ashwagandha — Withania somnifera. Ashwagandha is Ayurveda's premier adaptogen — supporting the body's stress response through the HPA axis, regulating cortisol, and protecting the nervous system from the physiological cost of chronic stress. Research reviewed by Epstein et al. (2023) documents its role in supporting immune resilience and reducing inflammatory load over time, creating more favorable conditions for balance at every level.

Triphala — Amalaki, Bibhitaki, Haritaki. This classic three-fruit Ayurvedic formulation supports the gastrointestinal tract, liver function, and the body's natural elimination processes. Documented by Epstein et al. (2023) for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, Triphala offers gentle, sustained restoration of gut integrity — which Ayurveda has always placed at the center of whole-body health.

The Complete Approach: All Three Layers, Held Together

Herbal medicine prepares the physical terrain. Consciousness work — breath, presence, intention, lifestyle — addresses the mental and emotional layer. And Reiki reaches the energetic body directly: clearing what has accumulated, stabilizing what has been disrupted, and restoring the coherence that makes every other form of healing more effective.

This is what Antarvita's Personalized Assessment and Recalibration Package is built to deliver. Not a ritual. Not a supplement plan. A genuinely integrated experience of care — designed from the beginning to meet you at every layer.

When all three layers are addressed simultaneously, something shifts that no single modality can produce alone. The body remembers how to organize itself toward health. This is not a promise. It is the direction that both ancient wisdom and modern science are pointing.

Frequently asked questions

What does energy healing actually do?

It shifts the nervous system out of sympathetic vigilance into a parasympathetic state where digestion, repair and hormonal regulation can resume. Most women notice it first in their sleep.

Does Reiki work with Ayurveda?

Yes, and they cover different ground. Reiki settles the state; Ayurveda gives the daily rhythm, food and herbs that keep the state from unravelling by Wednesday.

What is sound healing good for?

Sustained tones entrain brainwave activity toward slower rhythms, which is why women report the same drop into stillness they get from deep meditation without having to work for it.

How often should I do energy work?

A session every two to four weeks holds well when paired with daily grounding practices. Weekly is useful during acute stress or transition.
