Why Maca and Horny Goat Weed Are Not the Right Herbs for Most Women

If you've spent any time looking for natural support for low desire, you've run into both of them. Maca is in everything — powders, capsules, "women's libido blends," smoothie add-ins. Horny goat weed follows close behind, promising to do exactly what the name implies.

And yet the women I talk to who've tried both describe the same experience: something that felt like it was working for a week or two, then nothing — or worse. More wired, more anxious, breaking out, or just… not different at all.

This is not a coincidence. It's a mechanism problem.

These herbs are not bad. They are not fake. They do real, measurable things in the body. The problem is that what they do is not what most women dealing with low desire actually need — and in some cases, it pulls the underlying pattern further out of balance.

What Maca Actually Does

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable from the Peruvian Andes, used traditionally by Andean communities for centuries — primarily for energy, endurance, and fertility in both men and women living at high altitude under demanding physical conditions.

When maca arrived in Western wellness, the marketing landed on "libido booster for women," and it isn't entirely wrong. Some studies show modest improvements in self-reported sexual desire in postmenopausal women (Brooks et al., 2008; Gonzales et al., 2002). What those studies don't tell you is how it's doing that — and whether that mechanism is a good fit for your body right now.

Maca works primarily by stimulating the HPA axis — the hormonal communication line between your brain and your adrenal glands that governs your stress response, cortisol, and energy output. In plain terms: maca tells your adrenal system to work harder.

For a woman at altitude in the Andes, doing physical labor, in reasonable health, that's a useful thing to do. For a woman who is exhausted, running on stress hormones, not sleeping well, and whose body has been in low-grade survival mode for months or years, it's borrowing from a reserve that is already empty.

Maca doesn't build vitality. It calls on reserves. If there are no reserves to draw from — and by the time women find me, there usually aren't — the initial lift is followed by a crash, more fatigue, and no real change in desire.

  • Maca runs hot and stimulating. Women who already tend toward inflammation, skin flare-ups, irritability, or trouble winding down at night often feel those things intensify. The heating quality that helps cold, depleted bodies becomes a liability in a body already running too hot.
  • Maca contains glucosinolates, the same class of compounds found in cruciferous vegetables. In large quantities and with long-term use, they can interfere with thyroid function — which matters enormously for women, given how underdiagnosed thyroid issues already are (Bajaj et al., 2016).
  • The evidence in premenopausal women is thin. Most studies showing benefit are in postmenopausal women or men. The mechanism may simply not translate to women of reproductive age the same way.

None of this makes maca dangerous for everyone. It makes it a stimulating, heating herb that activates the stress-response system — and that is not the right first move for a woman whose nervous system is already overtaxed and whose body is asking for nourishment, not activation.

What Horny Goat Weed Actually Does

Horny goat weed (Epimedium) is a Chinese medicine herb with a long history of use — primarily for men with erectile dysfunction. Its active compound, icariin, works by inhibiting an enzyme called PDE5.

You may recognize that mechanism. PDE5 inhibitors are the same class of drug as Viagra and Cialis.

PDE5 inhibitors increase blood flow to erectile tissue. In men, that addresses the primary physiological barrier to sexual function. In women, the primary barrier to desire is almost never blood flow. It's depletion, hormonal shift, nervous system dysregulation, and the kind of deep tiredness that doesn't resolve with sleep. No amount of additional blood flow touches any of that.

Also worth knowing

  • It is drying and heating by nature — the opposite of what most women dealing with low desire and vaginal dryness need. Dryness is a signal that the body is asking for moisture and nourishment. An herb that runs dry and hot pulls in the wrong direction.
  • The evidence in women is essentially absent. A 2010 study suggested icariin may have some estrogen-like activity in bone (Zhang et al., 2010), but there are no well-designed clinical trials showing it improves libido or sexual function in women.
  • Quality and purity are serious concerns. Horny goat weed products are among the most frequently adulterated in the herbal supplement industry — what's on the label is often not what's in the bottle, and concentrations vary wildly.

The honest conclusion: horny goat weed was developed within a medical tradition specifically for men's erectile function. It was not designed for women's desire, it does not address what underlies low desire in women, and its energetic qualities work against what most women's bodies are actually asking for.

What Women's Desire Actually Needs

This is where the conversation has to shift, because it requires understanding desire differently than the libido supplement industry would have you believe.

Low desire in women is almost never one thing. It's typically a combination of:

  • A nervous system that has been in high-alert mode so long it doesn't know how to come down
  • Hormonal tissue that hasn't been properly nourished — particularly as estrogen shifts through perimenopause and beyond

This is the hardest thing to hear in a culture that wants instant results: real nourishment takes six to twelve weeks to fully express itself. But when it arrives, it holds. It isn't borrowed from a reserve you never had. It's built from something real.

Why Shatavari and Tulsi Work Differently
